Been playing with this lately. The image does not really show the cool glittering effect of the copper flecks within the stone.
It is actually a man made gemstone. The way it was told to me by the guy I bought it from was Italian monks using alchemy tried to make real gold. This is what they ended up with.
Not sure about the monk story, but sure looks cool.
I have seen it recently in blue as well.
