A "gemstone" some of you all may not be too familiar with is Elk Ivory.  I live in the shadow of the largest elk herd in the world, so I have a bit of demand for Elk ivory -  I created a couple of pendants today, and thought I would share with the forum.  The one with the coral is from an old stash of natural red 4 mm round cabs. I maybe should have used sawtooth bezel wire as those small cabs were a B to set with straight bezel wire. Critical or honest  comments are always welcome.  These bails are center back so the pendant hangs on top of the chain or cord - I am finding this look to be popular and selling well as it differs from the traditional top bail.

Look great to me. The ivory's from the teeth? Not the antlers right? I can see where those bezels for that small a cabs would be a booger. Yeah you're right serated would probably be a better/ easier choice next time. The antiquing for the background really brings out the ivory & cabs.

Mike,
Every elk has two ivory tusks, like a walrus or elephant, 'cept smaller.  They are not teeth per se, but are found in the upper jaw forward of the teeth, and are actually ivory.

Very nice! yes  I love the antiqued background, it really sets it off nicely.  While I like both of them, I really like the texturing on second one!  That would also look nice as a ring but probably on a smaller scale though!

These must be quite rare aren't they?  Its not like you find them laying around?  Follow the hunting parties perhaps? ???

Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Rockoteer
You asked about rarity.  We have a local herd of over 5,000 elk here in Jackson,
Here is a link to the National Elk Refuge http://www.fws.gov/nationalelkrefuge/

but they have to die to harvest their ivories. I haven't hunted in 20 years, and could never gather enough by myself to meet demand so most are sourced from hunters all over the state, but sometimes I will buy from neighboring states of Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and Uta.

I found a nice set on a winterkill bull this spring. Double score....A 5 point rack and a set of ivories!
