George, I think the idea was getting people to try something outside their comfort zone.

I understand, and this is certainly outside that comfort zone for me.. Maybe I will pick up the proper grinding and sanding tools for carving down the road.

Sara...

I forgot to say that thiis is Sodalite. Looks a lot like Lapis, but a much darker blue.

I have never seen sodalite with pyrite in it before... I suspect it is actually lapis. Both the Bolivian and the Brazilian sodalite are an even darker blue, and usually have a figure of criss-crossing feldspathic lines. But for me the main giveaway is that streak of pyrite...

I am not sure about a lot of stones but I have some lapis with pyrite too so that is what made me say lapis George. I dont mind being corrected if I am wrong either and I thank you Aaron and Christopher for agreeing on what I thought it was.
Let me tell you about my day. Its been Murphy's Law all day long. I was optimistic when I got up. I had thought up a design for the contest. A fern leaf. I wanted to make it out of Epidote with copper from Michigan. I woke up whistling and ran down to draw it out. hehe Looks just like a fern leaf doesnt it:) Youngest son is my worst critic. he said it looked like alligator mouth and then gave me a hug:)

My motor burned out on my flat lap this weekend. Big heavy duty sigh. But thats ok I have other ways of polishing stone.  I used my tumbling grit on glass which Bobby told me about but I dont know if this stone is hard as a rock or what..... So when I finally gave up I took the design outside to see if there was any shine at all and dropped it on the rock in the landscaping and never did find the tail end.  Big big sigh.....
Then I came running  upstairs and dropped the design once again and broke it in half. This time I said @*(Q%#$%#$W%Q@#$%FSGFS...
So here is my leaf, I had such high hopes. Just call it a preform and its waiting before I polish it...

LOLOLOL Sara!!!!!!!!!!  I glad I'm not the only one that does that...  I always drop them trying to take pics of them.

OK, I worked on it all day and could only get crappy pics in the kitchen where the light sucks.  The one in my hand represents more of the true color of the plasma jasper but the other one shows more of the carving detail so there you have it.

LOLOL Bob:)
Come on everyone join in please:)
I was looking at my leaf and wondering why everything I try to do looks like it should belong in a Tim Burton movie?
Maybe I should design a necklace for Johnny Depp to wear as Barnabas:)

Ha....Sara I have boxes full of unfinished/ruined/forgotten projects. (Remember Richard Brautigans Library of Forgotten Works? I think it came about in a short story titled "The Abortion" Or maybe it was "The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster")  Not sure. But I regress.....I do seem to get back to them eventually.........for the most part. I found a scrap of uknown Jade that isnt the greatest in one of those boxes and it seems to be a little leafy.  I am overhauling my work area in the little shop room so I have a project for today. Multi-tasking you know. I am in.

I stand corrected !

OK, so after a lot of delays, here is my attempt in creating a leaf.

This wonderful stone is a Regency Rose that came from Sara and comes in at 60 x 34mm.

As I did not have the right burs to dig deeper, I thought leaving the surface between the vanes uneven would  make the vanes stand out more. Which it did, but it created a huge head-ache with the polishing. Now everything is polished but the shadpws that allow the vanes to be visible, also creates the effect of an unfinished piece.

In the end, I'm quite happy with the piece at hand (until further notice as usual  hide)
