Somewhere over the rainbow... way up high

« on: September 05, 2011, 08:48:35 am »

Since Garry set me on fire to try my hand at leaf carving and fall is looming on the horizon I am getting ready to undertake this new project.
I dont want it to be a contest, I just want us all to have some fun.

Maybe I should ask everyone to name their leaves. LOL Like famous movie stars or musicians or anyone that is famous:)
Does this sound like good idea?
Any suggestions or thoughts would be good to hear:)

I sure want to try one, but will really be tied up for the next two weeks.  And yes we need to name them.

Since this is end of summer and people are gearing down for fall maybe we should let it go on for a while say 10/15/2011?
I have been working on mine already:P
I had one drawn out and son laffed at my attempts so I had to go back and try again:)

I'm working on one right now.  I just have to dig out my Foredom carving tool.

Great start Christopher, super idea, nice color and excellent execution.

Is this N.American or Mexican ?
I have tried shaping Mexican before, but find that it does not work for me, dunno

if the basic overall shape is not there Like the one in the picture (something I have shown before). In all the pictures it resembles more a hand, yet when you see the real thing worn, it looks much more like a Maple leaf.  Originally I tried to leave some patterning on top, but it did not work, so I went all the way to the color and just shaped the outline. The diamond is primarily there because that was/is the only spot without color (a hole going all the way through the stone).

Working on something new for here and hope to be ready to post by Sunday.

Well it did not take me long to realize that I just don't have neither the proper tools, and skill !!

I did manage to get a pretty good shape to it, but thats about it.

Not even close to being any where nearly as nice as the ones shown, but...., hey, what the heck !

George:) What a  lovely blue lapis:) And the design is perfect:) A leaf like this could work within a number of designs.
It dont have to be intensely worked to feel the wonder:)
