This slab has some amethyst sage characteristics but the colors seem off. There's black material in the rind instead of white chalky matrix and the red/orange doesn't look familiar. Ideas?
Thanks!

Amethyst Sage is pretty varied. I think without the purple it's been called Denio Dendritic. I've seen it all the way from red to tan, and the whiter portions shading to gray and black. I think your material is right in there. As a matter of fact, I have two big chunks that are that same red/orange but with lavender stringers through it.
You've got some nice dendrites. too!

Thanks Craig,
I figured it was, but it looks different than other AS I've seen. Maybe it's from the earlier pre-purple digs.
I think there are some very moody cabs in there - can't wait to cut it!
Thanks,
-Jeremy

I have some very large slabs with the tan colors that I made a cab from. The slabs have no amethyst sage colors but they are definitely from the same location. Bob

I have been to the mine and dug in the tailings and all the agate have the white chalk on the rind. But it dose look like the pumpkin color that comes from there. The owner was going to shut the mine down because the seam had run out. He was doing restoration work to meet the blm rules and dug up anouther seam, mostly the pumpkin. So he still digging agate. He takes equipment and dose a dig once or twice a year. I know I person that knows the owner and goes out when he's digging and picks the high grade agate and pays wholesale. I asked him to let me know the next time he's there so I can go too.

If I can get away for a few days I was going to make a trip to virgin valley for opal and the Amethyst Sage mine is on the way and I will at least stop and dig in the tailings, I will take pics and do a report. I should dig out some of the cabs and post them.
