I got this in a lot of old lapidary stuff and i'm just now getting around to cleaning it up. (needs a lot more work) I'm still very new to cabbing, truthfully I only completed five cabs. But anyways is this device for making bracelets or rings? I don't no if I should keep it for doing work when I get better or if it's not something I'll use, does it have value for trading or selling. For the most part right now I would like to no what it's used for if anyone knows.
Thanks.
Mike

If you plan on making your own jewelry, those are well worth hanging onto. If not, you'll have no problem selling those or trading for a niece piece of lapidary equipment that you need.

For maximum value you'll want to polish the mandrels to a high shine. Rust scale or pits will leave marks in jewelry metal.

This is a really nice set. It appears that the base has a clamp for a workbench, so the mandrels would extend out parallel to the floor.

The oval and square mandrels alone are pretty pricey new, as is the bracelet mandrel. The holder, in my opinion, makes it even better. The tang on the bracelet mandrel is a real plus as it makes it easier to work on.

Clean it up with a wire brush on a grinder and then bobbing compound on a felt wheel. You won't believe how pretty it will be and I lay you dollars to donuts once you clean it you won't be able to bear to part with it. Put some wax on it when you're done and it'll help to keep it rust free.

If I were you, I'd hold on to it. But I hold on to every tool so maybe I'm not the best person to listen to.

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the info. It does have the base clamp. Good idea with the bobbing compound, now all I have to do is get my buffing wheels back from my father. He "borrowed" them 2 years ago to buff out some watch cases (he fixes pocket watches) and has yet to return them. LOL. I have the same problem with tools, if I have the slightest idea I might use it, I won't get rid of it.

This is a very useful and valuable tool set for jewelry making especially the anvil/bench pin and ring mandrel holder. It is an older two piece unit. Newer versions have the anvil and ring holder as a single unit. These newer ones are about $30 without the bracelet mandrel. We are going to buy a bunch of these for our classroom because they are so universal and useful. A company called Coffey used to make them but it is out of business. They can be found at Seattle Findings.
