Hi guys! Since joining a lapidary club, I've cut about 15 cabochons, but I've never before used them in my jewellery. Now that I'm starting to learn more silver-smithing techniques (e.g. bezels), I am finally able to do something with my own stones!

Here's the very first piece of jewellery that I made with them. It's a pendant necklace with a lace agate cabochon. The cab's finish isn't too smooth, I still haven't figured out the perfect polishing techniques/sequence, yet I'm quite pleased with the overall result. I still have a lot to learn, though (the bezel-setting isn't perfect by far, though it's hard to see from front-view). Luckily, I have lots of homemade cabochons still lying around to practice on. Also, I'm sure that the experience of setting the stones myself will help me improve my cutting skill and technique.

Thank you for reading/looking.

Thank you  ura

The cabochon has some scratches on the surface from wrong polishing. It doesn't show well on the picture since the scratches are very small and shallow. I hope to improve my polishing work, but I haven't gotten any opportunity to practice lapidary since a long while now...

Very nice! Is it just the v frame that is soldered to the bezel or some part of the rest? I would be curious how you sequenced the steps to make this. You have a very unique design there. I really love it!

Thank you!

I soldered the V-frame and a connector-eye to the bezel. Then I set the stone, because I'm still a beginner with setting and I didn't want to wait till the end to 'find out' whether I would mess it up or no, haha. After that, I attached the wire-decorations by weaving it onto the frame using thinner wire. Here's a photo of an in-between-step:

Nice job and good work on the solder joint at the tip of the V.  that is hard to get so that it shows as little as yours does.  As for the stone work, practice, practice and patience.  Check between each step that all the scratches are gone before moving to the next finer grit.  They will get there.

Keep it up

Yes, I use a combination of silver-smithing and wire-work techniques. :)
(You can view my other jewellery on my website www.yeskecrafts.com , but this pendant here is the only one yet in which I used a cab of my own. In fact, I've only quite recently started setting cabochons!)

Wow, nice! Thanks for showing the in-progress photo.

No problem! I'm in favor of an open learning environment in which jewellery/lapidary artists share their knowledge and process with each other :) In case you're interested in learning wire-work techniques, I'd recommend the tutorials by Iza Malczyk.

Thank you! I myself was bummed that the seam *does* show (it's slightly darker), but I gather that it happens more often?

I hope I can get to more lapidary work soon so I can improve my polishing skills and make me some more pretties to make jewellery with.
