I'll add another purple stone, since I just learned of it... Spurrite!
A rare neosilicate from Mexico...

I need some Spurrite! I'm just girly enough to love all things purple; it really is my favorite color.
Another stone which can be purple is Vivianite. I have a small piece of it; it's not that attractive.
A question going out to all old-timers: I bought a small slab from an old-timer lapidarist that he called "Viscara". I can't find any mention of it anywhere; I don't know if it's some odd chalcedony or what?
Anyway, here's a picture of it. The face is Viscara.

It may be that the different colors you're seeing are due to the inclusions of other minerals, a common occurrence in sugilite. Bluish tones are probably Richterite and reddish, as in the image, are Bustamite There are many other mineral combinations but those two are sought after by sugilite fans.
There aren't many purple-to-lavender opaque cutting materials. There's sugilite, of course, along wiith Charoite and Lepidolite. I can't think of any others off the top of my head except perhaps Turkish purple jadeite. Maybe others can suggest more..
Sugilite with Bustamite:
Thanks for all the detail and explanation. Do you feel my stuff could be sugilite?
Also while we are all loving on purple any id guesses on these.

Pretty hard to tell from the photos, but the fourth and sixth look like candy opal.

Took a slab off it tonight. Had these trimmings after the preform. Thought maybe the angle or crosscut might help. Thanks again.

And a couple pictures of the cab. That is also impossible to photograph. Much more purple in person.

The photos of spurrite are exactly like some slabs I bought from a dealer who called it sugilite. Dang it! Would the price of spurrite be expected to run similar to sugilite (I hope)? He said it should be stabilized with hyxtal which I haven't bought yet so have not worked it into cabs yet. Any comments on stabilizing?
I've got another purple stone my fellow club members said might be Burrow Creek jasper or agate. Has some thin red veins running through. Any ideas?
