Reading the post about flux not working got me to thinking.  The only flux I've ever used is plain old borax.  It seems other people use anything but.  Do those commercial fluxes work better than borax?

I only use Handi Flux (borax) and it works great for me.

There's a good discussion of solder and flux at

If the borax is working for you, you don't really need "better". Unless you're having a firescale problem or your solder isn't flowing, I don't really know why you should change. Often we use the flux we were taught to use by whoever taught us in the first place. Most of the commercial fluxes are just variations on a theme (either flow fluxes or barrier fluxes), most of them work fine, and, again, if it ain't broke, why fix it?
