Mary and I live in Pensacola FL.  We will travel to Arkansas, North Carolina and Georgia (La Grange, GA) and want to travel further on vacations.  But what about Florida, does anyone no of places in Florida to find rocks and other specimens? What about Southern Alabama, Georgia or Eastern Louisiana?

We will be headed up to La Grange GA a few hours south of Atlanta the end of October. There is a mining area where you can dig for quartz.  I will put up some pictures of our hall.

Thanks everyone for your help. I hope we can find some places in Florida to dig.

I live a bit farther south in Florida.  The best place to find quality rocks in Florida is the Internet and of course fellow members of this forum.   bricks

Your right of course Bennett :-)   but my wife and I like the thrill of finding our own stuff. It is to bad I spent almost 28 years in the Navy and did not get into rockhounding till I retired. Can you imagine the specimens I could have had.

Thanks Bennett.

Perfect Jack I will definitely check out the MAGMA group, as a matter of fact it looks like they may be going to places that are only a few hours away from us.

Thanks Much for the tip!

MrInavy,
We actually do have rocks in Florida.  There is always agatized Tampa Bay coral found all around the bay and it's small islands, also in many of the rivers  throughout the state.  Around Brooksville and north you will start finding a lot of lime-rock, in and around the lime-rock you will find flint/chert of shades from light gray to dark brown, not very pretty but some of the gray looks good with silver around it.

In many of the rivers you will find fossil bones their mostly dark brown or black but neat anyway.

Don't forget the parking lots for the river rocks.

I had never heard of it before, but a very long time teacher at William Holland School of Lapidary who lives in Florida told me of petrified mud from northern Fl. Has anyone ever heard of this material?

Calcite crystals at Rucks Pit.
Do a Google image search for "Rucks Pit" if you want to see examples of what you will find there.
28320 Northeast 55th Avenue, Okeechobee, FL 34972

I am probably going to stop by over Thanksgiving.
PM me if you want to try to meet up.

We have some good specimens in the Tellus museum here in GA and the videos on Youtube make it appear that leaving with lots of good specimens is the norm.  Probably one of the best known public dig spots in FL.

Thanks for the info Lookout. I've heard of Rucks Pitt. Have you been there before, do you like it?
Thanks for the invite over Thanksgiving but Mary and I will be in Texas.  Please let me know what you find at Rucks.

Thanks very much for the info. I will definitely check it out.

I lived in the St. Marks area in 1974 and 1975 and there are some areas along highway 98 Between Pensacola and Perry. There are fossils, Some pale agatized coral ( solids ), and carnelian colored hollows as well as some bedded chert and agate. These are all separate sites.

A lot of time was spent with a power line right of way clearing crew out in the Apalachicola National Forest and on St Joe Paper Company land in the area keep in mind we had permission for the installation of a power line to be on all those lands. There are areas along public right of ways. Some are old borrow pits along the highways, others spoil piles from drainage ditches along county roads.

Can post photos of any and all of these materials.
