Hi all, I Joined the forum a few weeks back but am just now posting. I'm a Sophomore in College working at a Bachelor's in Geology and have become enamored of all the beautiful stones in the world. Last year I bought a rock tumbler through eBay and have run a batch through successfully. However, I've now developed a new interest in tandem and finished paying off a used faceting machine from craigslist.
I joined the forum in hopes of learning enough to get started in faceting. I intend to start a thread elsewhere at some point to detail what I got with my machine and am especially looking for information on what laps would be best to use.

Welcome aboard from another Southern Californian!

While there are several faceters here who can help, I'd advise you to join the U.S. Faceters Guild where the focus is specifically on faceting.  There you'll get huge amounts of information on laps and other matters related to faceting including diagrams, machine advice, etc.

Thank you all, I will most certainly look into throwing the money at that organization to get on their roster for the newsletter. I look forward to spending time admiring the works of beauty on the forum.

Your local rock clubs are another resource for faceting tools and training.  Where abouts are you?  I am in eastern San Deigo County.

Welcome from Western MA.  I spent 8 years in southern CA, specifically Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and Sherman Oaks in the Hollywood Hills with all the beautiful and famous people.  Really missed all the seasons changing and moved to MA and never looked back.  Wish i was into stone while in CA, rather than chasing the opposite sex, would have found more jewels that way.
