Hello everyone on here. You guys can call me Radio

I found this site  looking for information on rivers and creeks here in Washington to go hunt, and have been perusing the site a bit. you guys have some fantastic rocks on here, as what I call Myself an amateur rockhound I enjoy finding agates and other fun pretty rocks.

a quick question on cutting slabs, I have some mahogany obsidian that im interested in cutting and am wondering the best way to cut it, I have a 6" lortone wetsaw combo with the grinding wheel and 2.5" expandable wheel and polish wheel and Im wondering if I should be worried about micro particles of obsidian getting into my body. I assume using a full face shield and a respirator would be ideal for cutting it. but I appreciate any info You fine folks here can give Me.

Have fun and happy hunting guys.

I don't worry about getting silica dust in my body. If I'm working obsidian dry on the sanding belts I wear respiratory protection. Silica dust is everywhere. It comes from finely ground up silica (sand) and it is a significant component of the environmental dust that you breath every day when you are working in your garden, travelling down a dusty road, living on or near a farm, riding your atv across the desert or you are the last vehicle in the wagon train heading out on a field trip. Reasonable precautions when you are creating silica dust in your shop is protection enough.

Thanks Bob. No dry sanding going on here, doing it all wet style.

just remember, rock hounding at riffe lake is closed and WDFW will fine you for artifacting (up to $600 or more) for picking up a rock.
