New to the group. I live at the base of the Owyhee Mountains. Don't get in there to collect as much as I use to, but really have enough rough for 2 lifetimes. My weakness is Agates! Totally hooked! Like to trade, not into the monetary side of the sickness. Mark J Idaho

I do to. Have cut all types, my only complaint is it mucks up the oil. So I cut it just before I change the oil out. I can't get enough of Texas agates and the gel types of stones. But as we know this will change with time. Have a friend that emailed me with a new find of jasper, taking my time going over to their home. Could be a new bucket in my garage.

Craig,
There was A 300,000 acre fire in the Owyhees last month. It is called the Soda fire look it up. I have not been out to look yet, can't bring myself to do it. They say 10 years of replanting. 95 is now 5 times more likely to have flash floods. New finds will be made from slides and earth moving this winter. It was a very devastating fire. If I go out there I will take some pics to post.

Welcome from another rock junkie; https://www.flickr.com/photos/blueowyheegems/albums/72157657170520122Here is a link to some Soda Fire pictures I took. I have numerous friends in the area and some claims. The fire was very devastating. To those of you going out there be careful. The land will need years to repair itself and all the yahoo's going off road and tearin it up are .... well you know. So if you go out digging tread lightly.

Welcome from Mark from Western MA. You lucky dog living by the Owyhees. So many lapidary stones to find. I have dreamed many times of just driving out there and pulling off the side of the road and sticking a shovel in the ground and coming up with the next Morrisonite.

Hey Mark, I lived in Norfolk Va for 49 years and felt the same way. 10 Years ago I sold everything packed up a rental truck and moved here. LOVE IT! but it's a rugged place lots of ways to accidentally kill yourself. Hot as hell in the summer... super cold in the winter. You have to be aware of your surroundings at all times in the High Desert. The road to the Morrisonite claim is very unforgiving. But spectacular! MJ

From that view, you wonder why anyone in their right mind was up there doing anything, let alone looking for rocks. I do remember reading that the guy that found the Morrisonite, was actually looking at Indian glyps on rocks and then noticed some kool patterned stone. So in this case, there was a reason to be way the heck out there. Other times i guess people are prospecting for gold or silver and find jaspers or agates as consolation prizes.
