The owl is a very interesting project.
Are those buttons (except the eyes) from one and the same piece as the back?

They are all beautiful, but I really love that little owl.   Good luck to you in the contest!

I've always loved the Art Nouveau dragonflies and yours is no exception.  Beautiful!

Opal's a much more difficult medium than the enamel in most of these but it presents many design possibilities.  I wish you and all our Forum entrants the best in the competition.

Thanks for the great replys, the owl backing is black jade, those little buttons- feathers are natural Peru opal, the eyes are SA painted lady South AU opal, the blue beads for the eyes are also the Peru opal cut from the same materal as the others its just the backing that makes them a different color, his name is Barney the barn owl, none of our entry's placed this time, a fiend that went and had a look at all the entry's said all the winners used very high value opal, $30 K plus gems.

Great job, my pick is the free form design. The others are awesome as well but the carving is great. Kind of tough if the judges are picking value over design.

So much for their declaration that value is not a criteria.

Yes the statement that value has no influence, if you have 2 carvings of equal polish and design but one uses a very high grade stone that has a huge wow factor and drop dead gorgeous its obvious which one will win, I could not afford to purchase gem of this grade.

That's a very sad statement for the contest.  Only people with the really big bucks will win, even if a more talented artist enters with a less valuable opal.  Very sorry to hear that.   Kind of puts a cloud over the whole thing.   dunno

I do like the horse (as well as the dragonfly), but the other one???
The whole setting seems off, and the diamonds do not seem to fit that stone in general.
Wonder if the setting is hiding something..........
