It more than likely is schist, I have schist there before with garnets in it. Up to a quarter inch is size. Last year my 7 year runs up me and is this a garnet ( I'm thinking, yeah right he found one) He hands me one almost a 1/2 inch in size. Got to love him.

I had my eye's open for larger rocks and never thought to look for smaller pieces like individual garnets.  I probably stepped over dozens of stream worn 5 to 10 ct diamond, ruby, and emerald pebbles along with the garnets.  I wish.  If i found anything like one of those, i would be there day and night looking for more.  But now my appetite is whetted for garnets and i want some decent sized ones with good color and clarity so that someday when i learn faceting, i can facet some actual Massachusetts stones.

Next thing, i want to also try to figure out where the old copper mines are and maybe poke around them.  I also need to look up graphite specimens and see if they are kool enough to go look for.
