I would play, but all my equipment is boxed up for moving. I hope I get set up soon. I'm getting the shakes already!

Was doing some cabbing today, remembered to take some pix. Already had this Marfa plume agate roughed out, so didn't get a pic of where it came out of the slab and why. Anyway, haven't entered much lately, will try and enter more often

Don thanks for stepping in and keeping the fun on! Nice piece Allen. Here is a Yellowstone River Moss we collected last summer. I set this slab off to the side awhile ago. I could see the potential cab with everything going, part of the vug, water marks, dendrites, little bacon action, but the crack that started by the vug made me set it aside.

What the hell I decided to cab it, it's a beautiful moss. It's like me a little cracked around the edges.

From a small lot of very variable 40 + year old agates from my hobbyist father. He thought they were from Brazil or Africa but he had bought some of his rough from Australia and I really think this looks like Queensland Agate, as do the others.  The original stone the slab came from looked like a blob of melted wax; a friend with an old lapidary saw cut it for me. This was the best slab (and the best from that lot, I think.) I drew the shape that pleased me and maximized the use. I've shown the slab, preform, and then 3 pics of the finished stone. It is translucent and looks like there are little specs of mustard gold colored dust floating in the lighter areas, but I had trouble showing that.

Nice stone ileney, it could well be from Agate Creek.

Between the white lines is that a sort of green snow flake?

Between the solid white lines, the color is kind of a transparent brownish green with teeny tiny yellow/gold dust flakes suspended throughout the greenish material. It is very pretty.

All entries are super nice so it's going to be a tough though super competition this time around.

I didn't really have a good entry material till I came across a piece of Royston Turquoise last weekend. I finally had the time to cab it today.

I just found this forum.  My son and I are just learning but will be posting some pics in the next contest. Having fun shaping and polishing, spending money hand over fist on equipment, watching lapidary videos, and inhaling dirt and dust by the ton.  Inheriting a bunch of rock equipment and rocks has created yet another hobby to overindulge in......  yippie

Welcome! I am looking forward to seeing your pics. I started relatively recently as well. Everything you wrote sounds great except for the "inahling dust" part. If you haven't seen the thread on silicosis, give it a gander. It is no laughing matter. I always use lots of water or oil and wear a rated dust mask (and probably should be wearing an even better respirator) whenever cutting or grinding.
