I know this is an older thread, but I'm going to respond in hopes it helps someone else sometime. In Canada, you can get denatured alcohol from marine/boating stores. The brand name is Captain Phab. Better than using methyl hydrate.

Here in the US it should be no problem getting this type of alcohol. We produce millions (billions?) of gallons of it to mix in our gasoline!

I still don't know what you use the alcohol for?

The denatured alcohol is mixed with Borax for a fire scale preventative.  The item to be soldered is dipped into the alcohol/borax mixture, set aflame to burn off the alcohol and then soldered.
