Had to take a break from Polka Dot and cut something different.  I cut this cab from a chunk of juniper ridge opal. I flattened the back of it with a vertical lap, and then glued it to a wooden block.  Once glued I cut the top off  in my slab saw. I was surprised at how well the elmers glue held. I had to let it soak for three days before it was loose.

At first I wanted to have two curves and two straight side, but as I was working it told me that it wanted three straight edges.

Thanks for looking!

The mine is located outside Klamath Falls OR. The material ranges from dark red to yellow opal. Some of it has dendrites in it. The yellow material is the most valuable because it is the least stable, so a good clear piece is rare. In previous years the mine was open to fee digging, but I have been unable to make it up. I did the next best thing and purchased a few pounds from the mine owner Chuck Newnham. Great transaction. I was really happy with what I recieved.

Thanks. I have a love/hate relationship with this material.  Because of the clarity scratches show up, and often you can't see them until the final polish. Patience!
