This morning I was able to get one decent cab out of some Arizona rainbow petrified wood. As you all know, Arizona petrified wood comes out of the ground very fractured. The fractures not only form horizontal but there are vertical ones too. I went through about three pounds to get this one. I really like this stuff, too bad the yield is so low. I was able to get the rings to show with a couple of colors. Thought I would share one with you all. Eric.

Very nice cab. Nice banding in it.

Rainbow PW has been the bane of my existence. I love the colors and patterms, but as you say, the fracturing is exasperating. You slab and cab a piece only to have a fracture show up while polishing.

Here's what I've learned from this forum and others about PW... the stuff found closest to the surface is the most fractured, likely from the heating/cooling of the seasons along with seeping water. The good, solid stuff comes from under ground.

I made a friend in Cave Creek a couple years ago who goes to Dobell Ranch once or twice a year to bring PW down to sell as landscape material. He lets me paw through any new hauls he brings down for the solid stuff. He said the folks at Dobell excavate every so often bringing new material to the surface. The deeper stuff being less fractured. I've gotten a couple good blocks of PW that have yielded many cabs.

I've wanted to visit Dobells Ranch but haven't found the time. If the offer still stands, they'll let you rummage through their PW and take what you want for $28/per 5 gallon bucket. FYI, it's illegal to pilfer in the national park, but Dobells is on adjacent private land.

Beauty, nice work.  I like to cut against the grain and look for scenic cabbing material. If you work with red and black color banding it seems to bear out nice cabs. No that I see your beauty I will have to look closer before I cut the other direction.   neal
