I'm been cutting opals for a couple years now but am new to silversmithing.  Here's what I finished this week. (we'll see if I can get attachments to work)

1) LR Opal Ring, 2) Boulder Opal Ring from Jundah, 3) Larimar Pendant, 4) Welo Pendant, and then the jade wing I did last week.

Silver work is fun & looks like you're comming along. Only advice I'd say is. It looks like you're using too much solder (second ring & first pendant. A common problem for new silversmiths. Heat & solder controll is something that takes practice to develop the "eye" for how much to use. Keep at it & you'll do just fine.

Thanks!  I was very pleased with how the jade wing turned out.  I'm finding silverwork to be very challenging.

I would like to know how you cut the Welo Opal material. As I was cutting mine, it started turning clear when it was getting wet and even after drying it it the sun for days the color never was like it was in the rough stone. This happened on many beautiful pieces and I have not wasted money on buying more of it since then.

Each Welo is different but most of them are hydroplane.  The ones that are hydroplane change when they absorb water.  Some become clear again when they dry and some stay milky white when they dry.

When I cut them I did use water.  I basically studied it before cutting and kind of memorized where the fire was because once you start cutting, it's likely you won't see it until it dried.

I've also had some welo that had to dry for a loooong time before the color returned.  I've heard that some people let it dry in silica beads to speed it up.
