Last month my neighbor asked me to make him a Mother's Ring for their 15th wedding annivsary. He wanted it silver and 2 stones, he picked out Malachite and golden Pietersite.
The cab I needed reminded me of Steve's Bolo Slide so I PM'd Steve to get some pointers. Steve's help was priceless.

The Mother's Ring was finished  Tuesday and presented the next day. She has been totally excited and showing it to everyone.

With all honesty it turned out really well except the Malachite would not polish as good as the Pietersite. The same piece I trimmed the Malachite from polished great by itself but not in the mounting.

The Mother's Ring.........

Thanks for looking,

Nice design you got there. No wonder she is all over the moon. hatsoff

Just sad that it is really hard to take pics showing the full force of a Pietersite. dunno

I agree Kurt its hard to get the true nature of some material in photographs.  Sometimes I try to dull the shine in a photo to see the stone better.  Its a compromise either way you go.  The ring looks flawless and the two colors work well together.  Comission pieces are hard and for me additional pressure to do the job, hoping everyone is happy.  A big relief that they loved it Don.

That's kool.  Great workmanship.  Steve is really a super helpful guy, him and Mike and others gave me so many great tips and really helpful criticism.  Taking pics of stones, drives me nutz.  Glare this way, dull that way, to dark that way, no shine this way.  You just want to pull your hair out.  I have a lighting set up i made from help here and from some mags.  Sometimes it works great and other times its useless.  Getting the shine and nice color without glare is a crap shoot for me.  I just keep changing things and trying other things until i get a decent pic, if i ever can get a decent one.  Again, gorgeous ring.  Gets me in the mood to start working again.

Great ring.  That silver down the middle just makes both stones stand out.  She couldn't help but be in love with it, I'm sure.

Just re-visiting to take another look at that great Mother's Ring and again noticed you said the Malachite wouldn't high shine once set.  I have re-buffed Malachite in settings using a Jeweler's Rouge Cloth................Just a thought........... dunno

I tried some jeweler's rough on a muslin wheel with a very light touch with no luck.  The 50,000 diamond is what you see and it stopped polishing right there. Like I said the slab I trimmed it off of polishes real well with the 50m.

Thanks Mike. I first thought you were going to clue me in on something I had done wrong. I know there is a mistake or two I did and I'm not telling. chuckle

Wow.........I just take Malachite to 600 and then use Fabuluster.....Zam works too..............And, there are no 'mistakes', only 'improvements' to the original design concept on the fly.....................

Good info Steve I'll try that way the next time.

My material was some I found stached in some bins with other slabs I had put there 30 years ago. These slabs are so hard if you hit it lightly with piece of metal it has a ring. The malachite nowadays is much softer it won't ring.
