Mark,
No it's a little further than that maybe around Charlemont? I know someone is finding nice rounded garnets around erving but I haven't found out where yet. The garnets we find are still in rock. The water in charlemont is wadable 1' to 2' and some deeper spots. You can also find cross stones in lancaster and sterling also.

Mark,
If you follow R2 up further, I don't know how far there is a picnic area on the left, it's much easier there. Have also found nice size garnets up that way to. Up to 1/2 inch.

Hi Mark,
Here is a link to some more pics on this site.
http://gemstone.smfforfree4.com/index.php/topic,13739.msg159193.html#msg159193

I get the rocks around Shelborn Falls, MA On RT2.
I will see if I can get a pic of the tiger eye looking stuff tonight, But a lot of the stuff is frozen under the deck right now.
There are a lot of great rocks outwest, I wish I was more into collecting when I went across country a number of years ago. Where in Maine is there some good dig sites? My parents live up there and we visited 5 or 6 times a year?

Thanks
Mike

Hey Mark,
I don't know if it's wash down from Vermont or what. But if you look at my profile pic is what I have been collecting in the rivers of western MA. It's dark green and translucent also have found some that is a lighter green. It carves nice some have tiny bits of iron in it. It's lightly magnetic. I have also found some with a sheen like tigereye. I have a piece like the one in the pic, I'm waiting to cut up that is 18x10x6.

Thanks guys.  I have really missed you and this forum.  Maybe i will hang around.

In MA, we have no lapidary stone, though anywhere you stick a shovel, you will hit stone, its just rock wall stone or sidewalk stone.

Mark, I hope everything works out with the job. I been going through the same last couple of years. Anyways I've been finding lots of serpentine in western MA for the last 5 years or more. Pieces up to 20 pounds and larger.

Thanks again every one. I did the talk on friday. Most of the scouts seemed interested for 7 year olds. They loved the donated samples, I also picked up a box of sea fossils I gave out. They loved trying to be the first team to identify the sample boxes. The onyx, dino bone and shell agate were great additions. One of the last things I had them do was see if they could identify a piece of coprolite. Once i told them what it was. They all said "eewwww" but then smelled it. The older scouts were much more interested. We talked about guysers, subduction and other way mountains are built.

Thanks again for those who helped out, if I can do anything for you just ask. I also have access to cumberlandite and a very nice serpentine if you want some.

Hi,
Here are pics of the samples boxes I'm using and donating. 1 of them big ones and 3 of the small.
Thanks again, for all that helped.

Got lots of sandstone and limestone around here to cover sedimentary.  And I believe I have a bucket full of small bits of petrified wood thats rather drab and boring for lapidary work but might make nice fossil examples for the scouts.  I'll see what I can put together here this weekend.  When do you need these by?

BTW, I am an Eagle Scout and love helping out scouting programs every chance I get.

edit-I also have gobs of my local agate and red onyx if you want some of that.  Anything I send will have been collected by myself locally (within an hour of Las Vegas).

Got your box today great stuff, the scouts will love it.
Thanks again
Mike

Hi Phil,
Great to know. I loved New Mexico when I was out there 15 years ago (I'm getting old) I was away from rock hounding then. But I did shot about 30 rolls of film. Great state want to go back.
Thanks again
Mike
