Beautiful. The setting nicely compliments the stone.

Whoa! When I scrolled down was as not expecting to see all that worked into a single cab.  Nice work!

There is Bumble Bee jasper from Indonesia, it has that same bright yellow co!or. But the color comes from sulfur and it's best if the stones are sealed.  It's also usually banded, so depending on what you are doing, it may be hard to find a peice big enough.

Glad to hear your health is improving. Those are a very nice way to celebrate. I especially like the first one.

Oh my goodness that is indeed a supergrinder!  yes  I can't tell for sure from the pic, is the resulting profile curved?  If so, how did you find the slightly different sized blades?

Terrific work, and that carnelian necklace is great. I'd really like to see a pic of your new supergrinder.

What kind of stone are you trying to polish?  Does your piece have flat or curved surfaces? What surface (leather, felt, etc.) are you using on the flat lap, and is the backing hard or soft?  All of those factors will affect the process.

Indoor outdoor carpet from Home depot works great!

That's what I use, never had any problems with it.

gemfeller, nice work! I like the pic you added for comparison, too. Your improved pic is closer the actual appearance.  It's very similar to velvet malachite, but with some indescribable iridescence? brilliance? to it.  And it's that near-neon purple color.

finegemdesigns, I'm guessing, but I doubt it would cab well.  Structurally it appears to be the same as velvet malachite, so I think even with stabilization it would be very difficult if not impossible to get any polish on it.  I think the best you could do is cover an un-worked piece with a cap or resin.  That is just a guess, but at those prices no way am I going to experiment!  E.g., the piece marked US$1500 was about 1.5 inches wide and not very thick.  If you do try it, PLEASE post your results!

I got a few minutes to post some pics of the velvet (fibrous) sugilite I saw in Tucson during the shows.  These pics are OK but do not do it justice, it's not as goopy(?) as it appears in the pics.  Seeing it in hand it is unlike any other mineral I have ever seen. I did not buy any, as you can see it is quite pricey.  I got basically the same story from everyone I asked, it was found in a single pocket in an existing S Africa sugilite mine in Fall 2014. I have not verified that.  In any case, if I ever win the lottery...
