Quilters often use what is essentially a rubber thimble that might help. They are like very thick finger cots but they have textured surface to make it easier to grip things. You might try a sewing store like Joanns to see if you can find something that fits.
Beautiful piece and congrats on the sale. I agree with the others that the lapidary arts are usually undervalued, so good move on asking for a fair price.
