Title: Opal shell
Post by: mick B on December 22, 2018, 11:42:13 pm
I carved this little shell last year from Lightning ridge opal, still one of my favorite carvings, I want to make it wearable and also increase the overall size to 50 mm, it needs to be this size to be eligible for our Australian gem awards in the carving section this coming Easter, I used a piece of good local nephrite jade, I think the jade goes good with the opal, contrasting colors, I was thinking of using 330 epoxy but don,t think it has the strength to last, may try Haxtel of one of the other higher strength epoxys ?.

Thanks George, I think I will go with the 330 epoxy to glue the jade, it will dry clear unlike some of the higher strength epoxy,s.

That is what I use for the joining of any stone pieces..

The jade as an accent piece looks perfect for this piece. First place for sure!

Thanks, sorry for the late reply, my carving did take out the carving section outright against all carving mediums, my interest lately in lapidary has somewhat declined, this is the 5th time I have one this, I was wanting to enter our bi annual international opal awards in Lightning Ridge this year but all the opal I have purchase has turned out to be very expensive garbage, so it won,t be happening.

Thanks John, quality opal is a joy to carve, just wish I could get more for what I paid for this back in 2017, the Lightning ridge material is becoming near impossible to find at a reasonable cost.
