Title: Is there a good way to remove super glue from cab backs?
Post by: Santa Fe Gem Guy on February 03, 2022, 11:38:00 am
I learned lapidary work recently from an old man who taught me to crazyglue preform cabs to drywall screws which then screw into wooden handles.
And this works great about 80 percent of the time.
Sometimes however the cabs separate from the screw heads.
But that's not the problem.
He then taught us to torch the screw to release it from the glue.
Works great.
But the scraping off of the residual crazy glue from the cab using a chisel xacto blade sometimes causes me to crack the cab.
I have tried acetone but it seems to just make a horribly sticky mess.
Anyone have suggestions? Thanks.
I appreciate all of you contributors to this excellent forum.

I use a 2 part 5 minute epoxy. After you finish heat the metal dop stem with a candle flame and pop off gem. You can scrape softened epoxy off dop and gem back with a dull knife blade.
(This method obviously requires metal flat dops)

I was taught to put them in the freezer for a few minutes and then pop them off.

Acetone melts super glue.

I use a few passes on a 270 grit diamond flat lap to remove the epoxy then go from there if I plan to polish the back side.
