Title: Killer Cab Contest August 2014 Post by: Enchantra on July 29, 2014, 03:01:11 pm I am going to be heading out of town to visit family and attend my twenty year high school reunion. So I'm posting this up a few days ahead of time so when the first hits you all have a thread to post your pretties too!
For new members not familiar with how these contests work. Entries are cabs only. Completed during this contest period. Not cabs pulled from the drawer. Please include a pic of the original slab, then a pic of the preform, and finally, the finished cab. Please try to remember at least a pic or two of the original slab and or preform.. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the mineral, and or what ever else you would like to share. You can enter any shape cab and your choice of mineral. Things like intarsia, finished jewelry, carvings and composite type cabs can not be entered in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. Remember, this is all in fun. yippie24 Just a little something we do together as a group. More about just joining in, and having some fun. Cabs posted here are only for the contest. One entry per member. Title: Re: Killer Cab Contest August 2014 Post by: Enchantra on July 30, 2014, 10:54:09 am And here's what y'all will be competing for in August!
You can thank Tony (Catmandew) of Idaho Rock Shop for the gorgeous slabs. Sorry for the picture. I'm a bit shaky from my pneumonia drugs right now but otherwise feeling so much better! We have: Labradorite Stony Creek A chunk of petrified sycamore that broke off a larger slab in shipment. (Just means I have more to give out to y'all...) I will stay with old faithful Agate Creek. This time from the Crystal Hill diggings A pic I may have shown before from the top of Crystal Hill and two of the monuments there. (https://gemstone.smfforfree4.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1133.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm591%2FAllen-Ringland%2FDSCN1503-Copy_zps9d0a6275.jpg&hash=e3a4a8aadadaed9ad3cef0c9670a3c1e) (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/Allen-Ringland/media/DSCN1503-Copy_zps9d0a6275.jpg.html) The stone as dug there looks most unpromising, it takes some cleaning and fortitude to cut but the results can be amazing, a huge variety of stone. My cab from last month was galaxy agate, this stone has some worm holes maybe suitable to connect the galaxy's (any Dr Who fans here?) This small slab has some clear and tube(worm) agate (https://gemstone.smfforfree4.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1133.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm591%2FAllen-Ringland%2FDSCN1668_zpsfbb89738.jpg&hash=a485e5040983177010a7e3c310eb152b) (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/Allen-Ringland/media/DSCN1668_zpsfbb89738.jpg.html) On cutting the stone the back had some imperfections so the stone needed to be reversed. The damaged section could be ground off. Thanks for looking folks. Title: Re: Killer Cab Contest August 2014 Post by: Sandsave on August 09, 2014, 05:58:20 am I'll go second. This is a yellowstone moss we collected by Sydney MT. I thought it very interesting, most the moss we collected has black/orange dendrites in it. This one has green, red and black. You just don't know till you cut em.

I have a great weakness for cutting those myself, they can be a very challenging rough, but oh the results when a good one comes along. Title: Re: Killer Cab Contest August 2014 Post by: itsandbits1 on August 09, 2014, 10:07:30 am great entys; it looks like the month for clear with highlights is the theme so I'll have to do some digging through my pile... maybe some of the "Indian Mountain" will fit.

This cab was made from a nice slab of Dry Head Agate that I got back in January. I just got around to cuting an cab from it today. This material is so beautiful it is a wonder that i never got around to working with it until now. I guess I should check my stash box more often LOL
I took the picture of the slab back in January when I got it. Please exuse me for not taking a picture of the preform as I forgot to take my camera with me to the shop. Thank you for looking. Title: Re: Killer Cab Contest August 2014 Post by: Isotelus on August 26, 2014, 04:29:43 pm I tried to stick to the theme of transparent with highlights but my rough was not real cooperative and hard to photograph on top of that. It's an Amethyst Sage with some fairly transparent areas and the yellow area is violet by transmitted light ( 1st Photo )
All in and all said it was a fun stone to cut. The central dendrite is over two inches in length. Photo's are in this order. Window Shot - Transmitted light.
