I found these at the African exhibit.  If any one out there has an idea about actual origin I would be pleased to have your input. Banded Agate from ? any guesses?  That one photo of the whole strand has a 15" ruler there.  I am guessing they are at least 100 years old, and wonder who would wear such large beads.  But, there were iron bracelets there that you need a block and tackle to pick up.   This strand weighs in at three pounds.

Hi,They look like Idar Oberstein Germany produced beads. Most better quality agate beads were cut there then and tons ,literally, were shipped to Africa.Look at the holes with the beads lined up next to each other. the Idar holes will be more uniform than those from India ,and less conical. If they are very smooth uniform holes you probably have modern Chinese reproductions.Enjoy.

African "trade beads" are often quite a bit larger than those favored here. The very large shevron beads for example. Most often come from Africa & not American Natives. Same designs , material & place of production. The size of the bead not only denoted it's value. But in Africa also carried stattus that wasn't the case here.
