My humble entry is again from Agate Creek.

This time a piece of sardonyx from the Bald Hill diggings.

The stone is so straight I tried to give it some shape. The sides are 5 negative curves.

Art In Stone

About the only time I cut cabs is when I am doing a test polish of a new stone.  I  am working with Shattuckite from Vulture Mountain in Arizona.  This was a first cut on a piece I did a rough grind on - basically a heel.   This incredible new find belongs to rckdgr who is one of our fellow members here!
The piece looked so nice on the high dome that I thought I would also polish the backside.  This material has a lot of variation in it so the back hardly looks like the front.

This particular find is highly silicated and a mix of Shattuckite, Chrysocolla, Malachite, Cuprite and Turquoise, as best I can tell.  It tests at 4.5 to 7 on the MOHS scale and has a tendency to want to undercut when there is the softer Turquoise and Malachite (4.5 to 5.5) in the piece.  The Stattuckite, Chrysocolla and Cuprite seem to be more silicated and closer to 7 on the MOHS scale.

Hardness testing was done with test picks.  Stone componets based on hardness and past experience in stone cutting.  The new find has not had any scientific testing.

Allen: Nice clean and unusual material (as well as shape) for you. :)  Would be interesting to see how you are going to set that one.

Michael: Fantastic to see you throwing a piece at us for a change. Love the color, layout and all the additional info that you give with the cab. It looks very similar to a Kalaidoscope Jasper I had last year.

Keep them coming, we still got a few more days.

All entries are super excellent bar none. It gets tougher each month to come up with something to enter so I was digging around my slabs and come up on a decent slab of Piranha Agate from Brazil I had slabed a year or two ago. The photography is so so and I sort of made a collage for a single view, it's easier and faster to upload.
