Have noticed pages take an extra second or two to load completely since the box was added. Have checked during a few sessions now and it seems to be consistent.

Ok.. Think I have it set now so that users need to be registered to use the shout box.

Maybe just post here what username you would like to use and I will register it.

One downside is it appears to me that anyone can use a registered username and post. The only advantage is that I can edit/delete a registered shout ...

I dunno..   dunno

Yeah, watch the status bar to see "...waiting on shoutbox..." to load. It's only a second or so (usually), but I'm firmly in the camp that says toys and "cool" stuff on computers are either just another way to waste time and bandwidth - or worse yet, something with the potential to create real problems.

Just the opinion of an IT guy who has had to clean up lots of messes made by "cool" stuff on computers.

George, why does the chat double up on so many of the words we key in?

Cool. This one doesn't appear to cause slower page loads or script errors on status bar. Looks like a good addtion to the boards.

I have not noticed it on my end either.

I don't care for it myself.  I'm not going to use it anymore....just a lot of ???? I don't know quite how to describe it.

Seems like a lot of people these days auto-hide the taskbar, turn off the status bar, and most people don't pay attention to that sort of thing anyway. Mostly just geeks like me. The old shoutbox usually showed up in the status bar as "waiting for shoutbox..." for a second or two. The pages were still loading normally, but they weren't completely loaded until the shoutbox was fully loaded and initialized.

Nobody cares about that stuff except web designers and admins short on bandwidth. Website performance doesn't usually matter to end users until the whole thing craps out.

George This shoutbox thing was not really exactly what I had in mind because  it does not include video.    There are several programs that do include video.  I am thinking of Skype which I have used, there are also  other progarms, Google has one, Macs have FaceMate, and there may be others.

I prefer talking face to face rather than to type back and forth. I was used to skype  and felt that was very useful for what we do - we can show each other the specific rocks was want to trade/sell.  You wouldn't have to use any bandwith carrying the comments.  Just put a symbol that we have Skype (or whatever) available in our member ship list.

I think this would be a win-win-win situation:  those who want to do it, can; those who do not, do not have to;  and you do not have to do anything after a one time situation of adding a box on the members pages.

What do you think?

I think that would result in loss of forum postings.

Sort of just want to keep it a simple shout box for now. Feel it out..

Nice idea and will keep in mind !

I have a small concern - as a Mod on another forum I can see where this shout box the way it is set up could invite spam.  How?  You don't need to be logged into the forum to use it.  Which means anyone who stumbles upon the site - spammers included- can post whatever nonsense to it they want.  I have already used it without logging into the forum, so I saw how it could be misused.  Thoughts?

I hate it when I'm right sometimes.

What should be done?
I know some people really use the shoutbox a lot and others very rarely.

I quit using it long ago.  I wouldn't miss it if it went away.
