Realistically no flat that has been polished is really flat . Even in faceting relatively small facets the edges are still abraded more than the center. It only becomes a problem ( the problem is called rounding the facets) when it exceeds your tolerance for the degree of rounding . For any normal sized intarsia sic belts between the stone and the machines platen ( the rest ) will produce a non- perceptible rounded or domed top. This is easily done on an expando with care . This can be done with diamond also but sic is vastly faster in most applications , particularly the pre polish.
