Awesome, where do you get slabs of clear quartz? I'd like to get some for doublets. If you use it for a capping material, do you have to polish the side that will be attached to the stone also>

Dan, When you do doublets or triplets the surfaces being glued together don't need to be prepared below the 400 or 600 grit level because the Epoxy 330 readily fills any pits left from the surface preparationt. It is also better to stop at this level because it provides a better surface for the Epoxy to attach to. Here is my source for Synthetic Quartz. It comes in bars so it does need to be slabbed. Bob Lewis lewisroberth@yahoo.com650 773 9964 I have been working with Bob for over 25 years. He owned the rock shop where I taught classes. He used to deal in Silicon scrap from the electronics industry. It was an interesting material to cab, but it was as messy as working with Hematite or Malachite. Lately the stuff has become scarce and too expensive for general lapidary work. Bob

I am not an expert or anything, so maybe you can enlighten me... What, exactly, is the difference between 'synthetic quartz' and 'glass' is is just that the latter has been cooled to solidify quickly enough without crystallization? in this case, wouldnt glass be superior to crystallized quartz for lapidary use due to the lack of cleavage planes, etc? or are there optical differences that I dont know about? Just a naive question from a newbie!!

Azsavit, Synthetic Quartz is Quartz made by man to, as closely as possible, duplicate the desirable characteristics of natural quartz crystals especially for its electrical characteristics. Quartz doesn't have cleavage planes, but fractures with a conchoidial surfaces. It can also be colored to make synthetic Amethyst or synthetic Citrine. It doesn't have inclusions, cloudiness or fractures like the natural crystals. It is much harder than glass and has a striking clarity due to its higher refractive index than glass. Because it is harder than glass it is preferred for making doublet or triplet cabochons especially where it can become scratched or otherwise damaged during wear in a ring or pendant. Here are some photos of Synthetic Quartz and a piece of synthetic (Quartz) Amethyst. Bob
