This really was a yard rock we just picked up. Anyone know this one? It isn't a really fine-grained stone but has a mirror shine after the 3000. Fracture faces are even slick and shiny. Hardness around 7. The chunk shown is a little over 12"x12".
Neither of us can remember seeing one like it, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Wow. No guesses? The red, black, and white band runs all the way through the chunk, and there was a similar layer on the other broken end. Maybe I'll post a pic of a cab next weekend.
Thanks for looking. We haven't seen anything like it at Quartzsite or anywhere else we've been so we're at a complete loss as to what it might be.

Hi lovely rock, although I have no idea what it might be but it should come up great please share pics of the finished article. I love finding lumps of rock where ever I go and actually get more enjoyment out of working with them than I do from the semi precious rocks, have fun

It is very interesting looking rock and should make some lovely cabs Vince.
It is reminding me of something I have seen lately but sorry..... I look at so much rock and dream.

Thanks folks. Guess we'll just have to continue to "wonder" what it is. The irrregular shape of the color layers reminded us of some Wonderstone we've seen photos of, but since we've never had our hands on any of that we just don't know... .
This is why I stayed with Opal collecting only for so long. Soooo many other rocks out there that I still get boggled by one now and then. This is one of those for sure!

Thats a pretty nice rock for sure, for a yard rock anyway. My yard rocks wont hold a candle to that one. I dont know what it is either.  Is it native to your yard, or was it brought in? All of mine came from down the hill someplace. A lot of fill on my place to level it up. Joe. |

Thanks Joe. This was a yard rock in someone else's yard. Only a yard rock here until it's turn on the slab saw. No idea where it was collected, so we have no clues about it.

Looks like a nice jasper agate blend. Ought to cut some good cabs.

Hello! Found time to run some of this across the Genie wheels, up to 3000, so thought I'd post a pic of the shine this rock takes. Even just at 3000 it looks better than a lot of things I've cut...!

Thanks. Forgot to mention the ones on either side were just chips that fell off when I broke the rock along an existing fracture. That's why the original rock photo shows a chunk missing. The cab in the center is the only one I'll finish. I sliced it off one of the pieces broken out of the big rock. The two little chips were just shined up on one side to see how the different colors might polish. All good so far...!
