Have any of you folks collected or at least seen Montana Blue Quartzite? Apparently it may be from Stillwater County or thereabouts.

There is a blue Chalcedony/Agate from over on the Madison somewhere. It is called Madison or Montana Blue.

From what I have heard the blue quartzite is bluer than the Montana blue agate but not as translucent. The very high grade high colored quartzites here in Washington are very hard and can make very beautiful cabs but I have never seen blue over here.

I have never heard of the stuff either. The Stillwater mine is in that area, mainly a palladium mine. Could be, someone is getting it out of the mine somehow and that is the reason it's not well known.

Ok I had to think on it a bit. There is a Quartzite that is outcropped seemingly sporadically around Western Montana called Flathead Quartzite. I worked in a Quarry where it was mined over by Wolf Creek and found a deposit near Rogers Pass. There are red, black, blue and white layers in the deposit. It is not a typical Quartzite but composed of lithified, bedded, rounded, sand to pea sized gravel, almost a pudding stone in places. There is a lot of Hematite in it. I have been meaning to cut some of it but have not been back to either of the deposits for a while. Maybe this is it?

The only blue agate I know of is found near Avon, MT and is on private property but it is more light blue/clear than anything. I would sure like to know if anyone finds out about Blue Quartzite here in Montana. This is one of my wraps and is the bluest agate I've gotten from Montana:  Sorry it's such a big picture. |

Thanks Batwoman dada dada dada dada ...lol, ok we can thank Mark for that...lol. The cab was from a guy in Missoula, Mt who collected the material. Maybe if we find out about the blue quartzite I can get a cab of that to wrap.
