Here are some photos of some Red Ribbon Obsidian that I have been staring at, cutting and polishing.
This is a rough piece that shows the red bands that I work with. They usually are somewhat wavy so it is hard to get a single band to go across the full surface of the cab but that doesn't keep me from trying. In these bands you can see that the red doesn't continue all across the band and the rest of the band sometimes has the same pattern but just not in red.

Here is a photo of the side of the piece where you can see indications of where the various bands are though most of the time most of the bands do not contain the desirable red colors.

The rest of the photos are of a single piece that I cut the slab from that I recently posted. This is the same end that the slab came from.

This is the smaller opposite side of the piece.

Same end turned sideways.

A view of the side of the piece showing faint lines where the bands are. This piece had the red bands more consistently throughout the piece than usual.

A small slab cut from the smaller end of the piece.

The other side of the small slab.

The original slab from the larger end of the piece that I had previously posted.

I hope everyone found this to be interesting and enlightening.

Thanks for posting the orientation photos, Bobby! We seem to be getting similiar material from our "Black Hole" pit, with an occurance that looks like a really "loose" wing agate if cut thin.

The truly cool part for us is that we're getting electric blue ribbons! In fact, several miners and dealers ahev said that we're bringing out the best blue stripe they've ever seen! yippie

You've once again shown that, as with opal, labradorite and most other "sheen" stones,, orientation is everything!

Best regards,

I want some, it's beautiful....
OB has become one of my favorites to work with and
make cabs.

Where do you get something like this?  I just got a box of
OB from a sale.  Nothing like that though

Thanks for all the info....

I'm with Deb, would love to get my hands on some - is there a source that's selling?

A few of those pictures look so scenic - it's gorgeous, and you definitely know your way around orientation, great job!  yes

I wish I knew of a specific source or dealer of this material but I don't. This material comes from the Glass Buttes area in Central Oregon. I'm not aware of any other source. I haven't seen anything like it come from the Davis Creek site. A few years ago I got a small piece and a couple slabs from Ken Dull (deceased) with West Coast Mining. Last year when we were at the Madras Pow Wow as we were browsing through a few bins of Obsidian slabs (and other material) my grandson spied three slabs of the material (I have trained him well!) and recently I got some Obsidian from an aquaintance of a friend at the Roseville show. This material had been sitting in a metal bucket full of water rusting away for a few years. I'm still struggling to get the rust off. Not all of the pieces were red Ribbon material but some have some fire in them. A long answer to your questions, unfortunately.
If you look on eBay it usually is misidentified by the seller and isn't true Red ribbon. If you go to any shows and the dealer has any slabs or rough it pays to look the material over carefully. You can happen on a piece in these places.
I have never seen any large (over 3" to 4 " across) pieces of this material. Many dealers know I love Obsidian and they can sometimes point me to a source. There was a dealer of Obsidian at our local Pow Wow (Snyder's Ranch) but they were not particularly knowledgable on the material.
I will be at Madras again this year poking about for anything nice.

Seeing that makes the flintknapper in me drool!  Beautifull material!
Thanks for letting us see it from so many angles.
