What is it? I bought this years ago from a fellow in Montana or did he say it was from Montana. I can't remember any more what it is or what he said it was. I don't think it is Apache Gold nor do I think it is Covellite.
It looks like Pyrite in a blackish matrix or host rock.It is fairly heavy for it's size and it polishes very well. The host rock is slightly softer than the pyrite or what I think is pyrite.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Looks like Chalcocite and Chalcopyrite. Fun to cab but a little messy. Makes some great looking cabs.

I can see that it could be chalcocite but the hardness is stated at 2.5 to3 and what I have is much harder than that. I suppose other minerals mixed in could make it harder.
I do appreciate you guys helping.

We have a local stone here in western washington that looks very similar.Ours is a black carbonaceous slate with almost as much pyrite and the same problems with the open structure. This slate formed in layers between marine basalt flows and is found in a quarry that mines the metamorphosed basalt. The best of our rough has been impregnated with clear or light pink soapstone so the pitting goes away but as beautiful as the stone is it is still very soft. lots of unusual things out there.

All I have ever heard pyrite in matrix called is "Apache Gold". I have it in about 3 different matrix's. When I work the kind that you have, my water and everything around it gets black. It is soooooo messy! LOL My 2 cents worth of knowledge. Sheri
