I just wanted to say hi to everyone and thank you for feeding my addictions. I grew up as a rock hound in Washington and then moved to Arizona where I ended up catching gold fever. While out prospecting I often find other pretty rocks and have massed a large collection. My wife finally told me that I need to do something with all my rocks so I joined a local lapidary club a couple of weeks ago. Now I have been stricken with a bad case of the lapidary bug along with gold fever…they both are fighting for control of my life:) In the last couple of weeks I have been acquiring even more rocks. My brother and uncle just sent me 18lbs or slabs that I don’t even know what half of them are. I only get to spend a few hours a week on my cabs because of conflicts with the club hours and work. I hope to soon have some cabs done that are worthy of posting.

Welcome, It is a horrible addiction but can be easliy controled by collecting more and slabbing, cabbing, which leads to wrapping which leads to smithing and on and on. OK so it cannot be easily controled, oh well. :

Now, I would like to know what your wife has to say about your "doing something" with your rocks...LOL She just lost even more of her yard, garage, house, etc. Oh well, WELCOME! Connie

Thanks for the welcome everyone. My wife does not seem too mined me acquiring more rocks now that she seeing what can be done with them. She is even placing orders for jewelry that I need to make her. I think I may have stumbled into more honey-do’s rather then finding a new hobby. It is great fun but now I find myself contemplating how to spend more time doing it. I would love to get my own equipment but it is a little pricey to buy for just a hobby especially when I have multiple hobbies Casey, Welcome to the forum, you can always join rockaholics anonymous. I have tried their 12 step program but I cannot walk that far without picking up more rocks.

I recently picked up this piece of turquoise while metal detecting for gold. The cab was my first attempt and was made from green quartz that I also collected.
