Rodney reminded me after posting his States stone that maybe we should have a link readily available for everyone to look theirs up.

I think this would be a great idea for one of our cab contests.. Cabs from each of our States..  Smiley

Thanks Rodney !

How the heck  can Massachusetts have a mineral and gem that aren't even native to the state.  What the heck!

Looks like the Babingtonite is a State mineral.. Then the Puddingstone rocks on Harvard campus in Boston may have something to do with it being the State stone.

I have to look further to see where the two are truly from..

Why would any State choose a mineral foreign to that State then ?

It does seem a bit odd..

Willy has a thread going about this. He ran into a lot of this..

Here it is .....

The rock that you found probably fell out of one of our local politicians heads!

CMan,
The top rock looks like an aggregate, is it possibly man made?   It looks somewhat like a stew with bits of everything in it.  It would be interesting to see it cut.

Of course 'TheRightThing' may be correct and it is a piece of Florida politico Brain.  Grin

I've mentioned it here several times, how screwed we are in MA when it comes to rock.  There are basically two rocks in MA, rock wall stone and sidewalk stone.  MA is one of the rockiest states in the US, you hit rock every time you stick a shovel in the ground, but none are worth collecting or cabbing.  Roxbury Puddingstone has to be a joke.  That must be from a bunch of torn down buildings and mud.  I hear there are some pegmatites somewhere and you can find some Beryl, but not gem quality.  Goshen MA back east, they found some colorless gemstone Beryl called Goshenite, named after the town.  Probably not much.  There may be some Garnets around, they are just about everywhere.  I'm guessing that the only interesting stone we will ever find around here, will be stream rounded pebbles that might possibly have some kind of pattern or color.  For a contest, I will have to be adopted by another state.  Hey, any state out there that wants to adopt me.

Mark, if you want to come to Newbury, we have a site listed in Rock and Gem about a mile from me, known for collecting Chrysotile......that is, if you want a lot of asbestos hanging around!!!!!!

That's MA for you.  If they have a rock, its polluted.  I live in the Berkshires which is a really natural and beautiful area, except for all the toxic wasted dumps.  GE plastics makes its worldwide headquarters here and they used to dump PCB laden oil everywhere.  They are dredging miles of once pristine rivers to get rid of it.  They took soil laden with PCB oil and gave it to schools for their playgrounds.  What a mess.  And still no decent rocks.

Mark, Sush!  My retirement is based on GE doing well.  Don't want to make the stock prices any lower.  Didn't you know that those pcb's clean themselves......yea, that's it, they clean themselves!

Yeah, I think GE used to use that one too.  Just leave them piling up on the bottom of the river, they don't hurt anything and they will just go away.  Yeah right.
