Hello!  I’m Kristopher.  I’ve had a lifelong interest in rocks and gems in general and lapidary in particular.  I’ve only been able to indulge this interest during the last couple of months by taking some cabochon classes and purchasing my first grinder.  I’m blessed with an extraordinarily understanding/supportive fiancée, who is willing to tolerate my claiming the garage and who gracefully puts up with all the weird noises coming from there!  I’m hoping to reward her tolerance with some jewelry made with cabs that are half as beautiful as the ones the members here have posted, eventually.  I’m rapidly discovering that this hobby has the capability of progressing in a rather insidious way…lol.  I start off thinking, “well, I’ll take a cabbing class, and then we’ll see what happens…”  Now I’ve got my fiancée and I signed up for silversmithing classes beginning next month, and have begun thinking about taking some faceting classes when I feel that I’ve become expert at cabbing.  I hope that I can gain some valuable tips about equipment choices and techniques from the members of this forum.  My mother used to cut cabs when I was a kid, and my step-father has been doing it for about 10 years now, so I’ve always got them for support/help, but it seems much easier to read a step-by-step instruction list, complete with visits than trying to understand directions for 1100 miles away. Thanks for letting me aboard!

Welcome Kristopher.  Now we have 2 or 3 of you guys to keep straight.  Good thing you start your name with a "K".  Sounds like you have a lot of options for help and knowledge, you are lucky there.  And you are right about it being an insidious hobby / lifestyle.

Welcome.  Lucky you already have a house, cause once you get into this, one thing leads to another, as you've already discovered, and pretty soon you  wouldn't be able to afford to buy that house.  It's a good  addiction, though. Hopefully you can con your folks out of some equipment.
