Another great group of cabs last entry period. It was really great to see most everyone again showing different stages of the process for the cab created within the two week period. I almost slipped up and forgot, but remembered a picture as I was doing the preform. For any new comers.. The idea is that our cab entries are from a cab we do throughout this two week period. Taking a picture or two ideally showing the original rough/slab, preform and final cab.. How about we try something a little different? Forgetting about any particular mineral type. Let shoot for shape and the ability to combine a freeform shape with the mineral design. Contrast and colors will be something to think about and then how to incorporate those with the shape of the cab. Orientation of the mineral designs to the shape of the cab etc.... I suppose "style" might be the key term for this entry. I have a feeling we may see some exceptional cabs !  Have fun! I will post a pic of a slab for the winner. |

Here is the slab I picked out. Not sure of the exact type of Picture Jasper. This is a bit difficult. I started out with ten slabs that I considered cutting a cab from for this one. Narrowed it down to 5 and still looking those over. Been looking at a lot of Bob's cab. He is an expert in capturing and orientating designs and what not and combining that with great shapes. Any hoo... hopefully will narrow the five down to a couple soon! Here is the slab for the winning cab  |

OOPS! I started this one yesterday and finished it tonight..........but I forgot to get a before picture. The general shape of the slab was very similar to the cab's final shape. I mostly removed the rind and ground out a 1/4" fracture coming in from the edge. Brazilian Agate. It is larger than the ones that I have posted lately. It is 3 1/2" from the upper left tip to the lower right tip. Bob  |

See what I mean..... I knew we would see a killer cab from Bob Beautiful shape and just an awesome image. Is it just me, or is this not just a bit out of the norm for a Brazilian agate? Bob has set the bar high for us gang! |

Polishing worked out a-ok.. There are some spots where the rutile comes to the surface and the polish wants to stick there like a pit. Stuck it in the sonic cleaner and took care of it. Not even noticeable. Used cerium and went just fine and left an excellent polish. Thanks for the positive comments.. |

Not meant to pass off what I can't use, but adding these Morrisonite pieces to the Picture Jasper slab for the winning cab.
The one larger one is an end cut that is just way too thin. Maybe the winner can play with it and the other is probably usable except the back side is much less material. Again, could probably work a pretty small cab out of it.

Here's my entry. I bought the slab on ebay for 2 bucks listed as unknown agate. It was filled with surprises as i carved it =) 2.25 inches long. Moss agate?

I must say all of the entries this time are really outstanding! It is going to be a hard choice when the time comes. I am really glad we have started showing the whole process of making these beautiful cabs...
